A city rich in shipbuilding and coal mining heritage, Sunderland is a city synonymous with making things. Once the most productive shipbuilding town in the word, fast forward to 2018 and you now have a city that produces a staggering 500,000 cars annually at the Nissan plant in Washington. But it’s not just the manufacturing industries where the city is achieving its modern day successes.
Sunderland’s tech sector continues to flourish, with a recent report from Tech Nation confirming that Sunderland and the North East is one of the best places in the UK to start and grow a digital tech business.
As a digital business that has called Sunderland home for almost five years, Consult and Design have witnessed that growth first hand. Our growing team connects people with technology for clients all over the world and by hosting our international DrupalCamp conferences and setting up the Drupal Hub initiative in the city’s state of the art Software Centre, we’re committed to playing our part in putting Sunderland on the global map.
More recently we’ve been proud to support Sunderland Digital—the city’s first monthly meetup for the digital and tech industry. Established by four of members of our team in January 2017, Sunderland Digital has grown from a local meetup to a highlight in the calendar of the North East’s tech community.
Sunderland Digital welcomed over 375 people to Sunderland Software Centre during its first year, and is on track for even bigger year ahead. Covering a wide breadth of topics including artificial intelligence, virtual reality and mobile app development, Sunderland Digital has played host to guest speakers from some of the region’s biggest digital high fliers; SaleCycle, Accenture, DWP Digital, TH_NK and hedgehog lab.
Our Lead Front-End Developer Nathan Lawson hosts the event each month.
“We initially started Sunderland Digital as a means of bringing together the local community of designers and developers, fully expecting to perhaps attract around 15-20 people each month but have since seen close to 50 people through the doors for some of more our popular events.
I’m particularly proud that we were among one of the first local tech meetups to hold an event focused on mental health which attracted our biggest audience to date and has led to growing awareness and actions in the region about this important issue.

“We’ve had amazing support not only from our sponsors who enable us to put on a great event every month but also from the North East tech community who have really got behind us and commented how great it is to see an event such as Sunderland Digital happening in the city.”
Sunderland Digital takes place at Sunderland Software Centre every third Wednesday of the month from 6pm. For all the latest information on upcoming events and to register your place, please visit sunderland.digital
