My name is Joanna, I’m a Computer Science student from the University of Sunderland and also the newest member of an amazing team; I am currently undergoing an industrial placement at the Sunderland based digital agency Consult and Design.
My role as a Junior Drupal Developer involves various responsibilities and tasks, which means I am constantly developing a vast range of skills and always learning new things. Our work as developers is fast-paced and continuously evolving - this has meant that I have had to quickly adjust to effectively manage the nature of the industry.
My daily tasks can involve theming and developing websites or creating user training manuals. I could be working on project management tasks, creating design briefs, technical specifications and wireframes. I may meet with a client or partake in training. I have recently completed a Leadership Skills and Practices course, increasing my knowledge in the interest of personal development.
After just a couple months of working as part of the C&D team, I can confidently say that an industrial placement is an invaluable experience. I would advise anyone to take the opportunity should they ever get the chance, not just to enhance career prospects but to gain that all important life experience.
My time at Consult and Design has already enabled me to gain experience and knowledge that is not gained sitting in lectures. The best advice I can give to any university student is that you must be aware that your degree alone isn’t going to open all the doors you want to achieve your aspirations. It is the work and effort that you undergo above and beyond what is required from your studies that is going to enable you to reach your goals.
